Funding Policy

Skaters may wish to apply to the Ridge Meadows Speed Skating Association Executive for additional funding to attend competitions outside the Lower Mainland. The Executive may award funding based upon membership standing, and available funds.

All skaters and/or families must participate fully in all fundraising events in order to be considered for funding assistance.

There will be no funding available of first year skaters for one full year from the date of registration. New members are expected to participate fully in fundraising starting in their first year to become eligible for future funding.

There will be no funding to Master Skaters.

To be eligible for funding, skaters must participate in at least three major fundraisers during the year. Failure to do so would eliminate consideration for funding assistance. If for any reason you are unable to participate in any particular fundraiser it must be brought to the fundraising coordinator’s attention as soon as possible, explaining the reason you are unable to participate and to discuss options for participation in an alternate way if you so desire.

If you receive any funding prior to any fundraising events, and subsequently do not participate in all fundraising during the year, the amount subsidized will be added to the following year’s registration fees.

Any fundraising events that require tickets, chocolates etc. to be sold will now require a cheque for the full amount of the required items to be sold upon receipt of said items. The cheque will be held until the predetermined deadline and returned upon payment of cash, or cashed at that time.

Funding Criteria:

Criteria for travel within B.C. (Short Track)

  • Skaters may be eligible for funding of their transportation and /or accommodation costs, at a level to be determined by the Executive.
  • Generally the only meets to be funded for travel within BC will be BC Cup Competitions or Provincial Championships.
  • If the Executive has approved funding for interclub travel, all skaters shall receive equal funding for out of town meets.
  • Out of town funding is to be for L2T skaters and above. No Active Start or FUNd skaters will be eligible for funding to out of town competitions unless the entire club is being funded.

Criteria for travel outside of B.C.

  • A skater must qualify to attend a Competition out of Province through merit, i.e. Top 4 skaters in age class qualify to attend Canadian Championships &/or Canada West Championships. FUNd skaters will only be considered for funding for out of province travel under special circumstances and only at the discretion of the Executive.
  • The Executive will review all skaters that have qualified for out of province travel (including Canadian Junior, National Qualifies, National Team Trials etc.), and decide the amount of funding assistance from the Club.
  • Transportation costs may include airfare, bus, ferry, or private car. If private car is used, reimbursement is to be made for original, dated gas receipts only. No mileage will be allowed.
  • The skater is to travel be the least expensive route possible. For example, they are only to use airfare if travel by bus/car is not feasible.
  • Meet fees will be the responsibility of the skater, unless waived by the Executive.
  • Skaters will be responsible for their own meals.
  • All requests for funding assistance must be substantiated by original, dated receipts only.
  • There will be no funding for Interclub Members.
  • All requests for funding assistance must be pre-approved by the Executive.
  • Funding for accommodations will be based on the number of same sex skaters that can stay together + one chaperone per room or 14 of their accommodation if they choose not to stay with the other eligible skaters.
  • The Executive may elect to fund qualified skaters for a pre-determined amount to each qualified competition (to be reviewed by the Executive each season)

Criteria for travel within B.C. (Long Track)

  • Skaters may be eligible for funding of their transportation and/or accommodation costs, at a level to be determined by the Executive.
  • Out of town funding is to be for FUNd skaters and above. No Active Start skaters will be eligible for funding to out of town competitions.

Criteria for travel outside of B.C. (Long Track)

  • Funding shall be the same as criteria for travel outside of BC for Short Track.

Funding for Chaperones

  • Chaperones must be the same sex as the skaters and will be appointed by the Executive.
  • RMSSA may fund chaperones for their travel costs and accommodation when it is deemed appropriate by the Executive.
  • There shall not be more than 4 skaters per chaperone for accommodation purposes, with the optimum being 3 skaters + 1 chaperone per room.

Funding for Coaches

  • RMSSA will fund the coaches up to 100% of their travel costs, accommodation, and meal allowances when they travel to out of town meets to coach Ridge Meadows Skaters.
  • Coaching expenses will be shared with the Langley and Sardis clubs if they have skaters attending (i.e.  Total 1/3 total cost if all three clubs have skaters attending).
  • Claims must be substantiated with original, dated receipts.
  • Funding for out of town meets must be pre-approved by the Executive.
  • RMSSA will reimburse only the coaches portion of accommodation, travel, gas, and meal expenses.
  • Meal expenses to remain at a maximum of $40 / day / person ($20 dinner / $12.50 lunch / $7.50 breakfast). The Executive may elect to pay the per diem for meal expenses (as stated above). If meals are provided for breakfast and/or lunch, the per diem will only be for the dinner amount for those days.
  • There will be no reimbursement for alcoholic beverages.

Funding for Club Representatives

  • When it is deemed necessary by the Executive to send a representative to attend a BCSSA meeting or AGM, the representative(s) shall be eligible to be funded up to 100% of their travel costs, accommodation at host hotel or equivalent, and meal expenses(To a maximum of $40 / day).
  • The Executive shall determine the number of representatives that will be sent to the AGM when it is held out of town.

Funding for Camps

  • RMSSA may fund each skater in the club for one training Camp / year.
  • Only skaters that did not qualify for Travel Funding to competitions will be eligible for Camp Funding. This is to allow some funding to the younger skaters that may not ever be eligible for travel funding.
  • Funding for the camp will be for the Registration Fees only, to a maximum of $100. Travel expenses, accommodation, and meals will be the responsibility of the skater.
  • Funding for camps is to be pre-approved by the Executive.
  • In order to be eligible for camp funding, the skater must have been a member of the club for one skating year.

Funding for RMSSA skaters attending out of province national training centres

  • National Training Centres are in Calgary and Montreal, only.
  • RMSSA may fund skaters to return to BC to attend BC Cup and / or Provincial Championships when required to do so for ranking purposes.
  • RMSSA may assist skaters with travel funding to attend National Ranking competitions as determined by the Executive on an individual basis.
  • Skaters receiving funding will be expected to volunteer their services to RMSSA when possible (ie: assist at camps or practiced when in town).

All funding is subject to:

  • Participation in club fundraising events.
  • Approval of the Executive.
  • Availability of funds.
  • Meeting criteria for selection.
  • Skaters abiding by the BCSSA “Code of Conduct”
  • The good name of the Ridge Meadows Racers Speed Skating Club being dignified by proper behaviour in hotels and restaurants, on and off the ice, during transportation and towards other competitors, coaches, and officials. Failure to abide by the above may result in funding being revoked.
